bill

i often ask myself, who would i most like to have a beer and good conversation with? the answer changes a lot, but one of the regular contenders is bill clinton. (so is hillary, btw). the man is smart. and he talks about issues that normally make my head spin, in a way that i can understand and relate to. his newsweek article on the job crisis is worth a read. via good.

the white roof project

a simple idea with a big impact.

As we've reported on GOOD before, painting white the black roofs that top many of American cities can deflect 70 percent more sun, keeping interiors cooler, reducing the urban heat island effect, and curbing global warming.

congestion tax

i saw a commercial for this on PBS the other day (nerd alert), did some google research and think it's pretty amazing. stockholm (also london, oslo and singapore) introduced a trial congestion tax to reduce the amount of cars on the roads and paired with IBM to make it technologically seamless. "The goal was not only to reduce congestion, but encourage ancillary benefits, such as improving public transportation and alleviating environmental damage." in the six month trial period, traffic moved down nearly 25%, 40,000 more people ride on public transportation everyday and greenhouse gases dropped 40% in the inner-city. the tax was reinstated by swedish law in july 2007.

nice ride

a great new bike sharing service is coming to minneapolis this spring! it will run between NE, downtown and uptown. we had had the great fortune to partner with nice ride this past winter to come up with a bike kiosk poster near aveda's institute. here is my favorite design although it did not end up as the final pick.

sorel

love the clean, modern site design for sorel. anyone know who was the mastermind? the 360 view option is really great and when you order you can select to have your package sent in a reused box to cut down on waste. brilliant.

ecofont

smart idea:

Appealing ideas are often simple: how much of a letter can be removed while maintaining readability? After extensive testing with all kinds of shapes, the best results were achieved using small circles. After lots of late hours (and coffee) this resulted in a font that uses up to 20% less ink. Free to download, free to use.

crane paper

anna sent out a link today for crane's new line of 100% cotton paper with a beautiful swatch book designed by C&G. Coolest part: no cotton is even grown to make it -it all comes from fibers left over during industrial cotton processing.
